My husband made white chicken chili and I made gluten-free cornbread to share with everyone! There were all different types of chili, cornbread, chips, and spooky, Halloween desserts. Joe and I volunteered at the donut eating contest. (We had multiple ones at a time.) It was a sticky, fun mess. Joe decided that he wanted to do the contest too. He won! After volunteering we did some of the other activities. My favorite was racing my husband through a maze while balancing a gourd on our heads. He won on both occasions, but just by a hair. The first time, he leaped through the air to the finish and the second time, his gourd was on the verge of dropping so he speed walked bent over, hoping it would help keep the gourd straight. I did not see any physics behind it, but nonetheless it was so goofy to watch! I could not stop laughing! He knows how to have fun for sure! The children were so cute in their costumes! I wish I would have dressed up too, but I do not know what I would have been.
Oh well, maybe I will dream about it in my sleep!Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-16268472242506734552011-10-28T20:51:00.000-07:002011-10-28T20:51:24.540-07:00Halloween Fun!Last night, my husband and I skipped out on our town's Trick-or-Treating night to celebrate his new job and go grocery shopping. (The latter is quite silly, but at least we were together! Lately, we have not been able to spend time together with our busy schedules.) I regret that I even bought Endangered Species Chocolate to share with the children who would have come to our door. Oh well, at least there is plenty for us and my students.

Last year, I ran in Gahanna,OH at the Fright Night 5K, but unfortunately, this year, I will not be able to. My husband and I are attending a Fall Festival at church. I am sure it will be great! Now that I am running again, I am dying to participate in a race. I can not wait until the local Turkey Trot at Thanksgiving!Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-16073172410230625232011-10-21T15:56:00.000-07:002011-10-21T15:56:48.500-07:00Getting Back into the Swing of ThingsThis morning, after almost three weeks, I decided to go to the Y to workout. The stress fracture in my left foot has healed well enough to start back into running. Oh my, my legs and arms are sore today. I only ran 3 miles and lifted weights but it feels like I ran a 1/2 marathon with no training. I will have to slowly get back into running and lifting weights. I registered for another 1/2 marathon in the spring. This time, I will listen to myself.Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-87206534932841689132011-10-17T18:06:00.000-07:002011-10-17T18:06:21.697-07:00Take the Pledge - End Fat Talk!As a teenager, my mother would always say as my sisters, brother, and I left the house to go to school, "remember who you are!" I remember often times just rolling my eyes as I hurried down the front door steps. While in junior high, high school, and college, it was hard for me to remember such simple, profound words. To say the least, I forgot who I was. I became someone I no longer knew.

Now, a few years later, I am beginning to more fully understand my purpose in this life, who I am, and who I am becoming. I am grateful for a loving mother who tried to instill in me that I was someone. I hope to instill in women, young or old, everywhere that they are of great worth! They do not need to change who they are because they are not perfect. They are beautiful just the way they are!

Please visit this site End Fat Talk to take the pledge! I already did. I hope you do too!Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-10295007449140013512011-10-11T17:41:00.000-07:002011-10-11T17:41:05.303-07:00Swimming in the Deep Blue Sea!Yesterday, I felt as though I was swimming through paperwork, lessons, and all sorts of trouble from students. It was Monday, so maybe that had a lot to do with all. But, honestly, I was dog paddling just to keep up. I could not wait until my husband could pick me up from school (we only have one vehicle). My husband arrived and like always we talked about our day. However, before I could mention about how my day went, my husband asked if we could go swimming at the Y. I sat stunned in the passenger side of the car. I could not believe it! He wanted to know if we could go swimming, especially after the day I had? I could not help but laugh and say, "Yes!"

I am so glad he asked! We had a great time :) We'll be back for sure!Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-86082098959981530592011-10-05T18:57:00.000-07:002011-10-05T18:57:54.095-07:00Listen to Yourself!I made a mistake but a lesson well learned - listen to your body.
After running the Dayton Air Force 1/2 Marathon, my left knee became sore. I gave it a few days to rest, but then quickly started back up running, walking, biking, and weight lifting. I needed an escape from the stresses of teaching and difficult situations. I continued to experience pain but ignored it and kept going. I soon realized that I was beginning to feel pain in my metatarsal bones. I thought that maybe I just tied my shoes too tight or needed new shoes.

However, yesterday, as I was going up and down the stairs at school, I could not bear it anymore. My foot and knee were in immense pain. (Of course, I do not believe in elevators!) I called the doctor and was able to be offically diagnosed. I have a metatarsal stress fracture and runner's knee.

I keep asking myself, "Why did I not listen to my body?" I felt pain, but thought of excuses for the pain. Now, I am in more pain and injury than I would have been, if I would have just listened. Sometimes, I forget that it is alright to rest and take care of myself. I am amazed and grateful that our bodies know more about us than we think. This life is truly not sprint but a marathon - maybe an ultra-marathon at that!Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-52378695074246953302011-09-27T18:43:00.000-07:002011-09-27T18:43:04.383-07:00Fall Favorites!I love everything fall! The changing of leaves to flamboyant reds, yellows, oranges, and browns; eating warm carrot cake muffins, pumpkin pie, and oatmeal; wearing longer skirts, long sleeved blouses and riding boots (oh, also big, baggy sweaters too); running or walking through crisp breezes on early mornings or evenings; making piles of leaves and jumping in them; and snuggling up with a blanket and book.

I was reminded of my fall favorites today as my husband and I realized that on Friday we will be asked to park about three or four blocks away from our apartment to accomodate visitors this weekend. This weekend is Oktoberfest in our town. People come from all around to participate in the 10K race, eat good German food and drink lots of beer. My husband and I do not drink, but we enjoy participating in the 10K race that ends at the corner of our street. It is an incredible sight! This year, I will be running in the 10K race with a few friends. I am excited! I hope that my knee holds up for me. After running the Dayton Air Force 1/2 Marathon, it has not quite been the same. I am hoping it is just runner's knee. If all else fails, I can run/walk the 10K.

Summer is truly drawing to a close and fall is entering again for yet another season!Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-9660492786002796082011-09-25T17:58:00.000-07:002011-09-25T17:58:00.190-07:00Fitting it all in!Yesterday was a long day. Aside from teaching during the week, I have a part time job on Friday evenings after school and on Saturdays (unless, I ask for the day off). This Saturday I worked a double shift. What was I thinking? I was so exhausted and of course did not accomplish everything that I wanted to get done - run, lessons to plan, clothes to wash and fold, dishes to wash, and spend time with my husband.

I am in awe that some people are so organized, balanced, and just simply have it together despite hectic schedules or long days. They check everything off their list during the day and rest peacefully at night. I need to challenge myself to get more organized - prioritize my activities and responsibilities so I can rest peacefully. Because this morning, I woke up tired, rushed and scrambled; insomuch that my husband and I were late for church!

What do you do to stay organized?Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-32944929657612295002011-08-10T13:02:00.000-07:002011-08-10T13:02:41.266-07:00Workout + Blue Skies = Perfect! What a beautiful day! I took my bike out for a spin around the countryside. It was an incredible sight - the corn blowing in the wind, no cars on the road, and the sky was blue with fluffy, white, pillow clouds = perfect!
Enjoy your day :)Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-71717494586121101142011-07-19T09:50:00.000-07:002011-07-19T09:50:14.600-07:00Heat Wave = Sweat'nThis morning I went out for a run and the moment I began, I was dripping in sweat. Some say that sweat looks as if you are glowing and maybe I was :) It did feel great!
I never have until now. It has been two weeks and still no voice or any comfort. It is the strangest thing. I have not been able to run without my lungs almost collapsing but with the use of an inhaler it seems to be working. I am hopeful that it will not be too long until I can run full speed ahead.

In the meantime, I will take the doctor's orders to rest, rest, and rest.Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-11585011460799521922011-06-01T12:35:00.000-07:002011-06-01T12:35:44.633-07:00National Running Day!I hope you got your run in today because it is National Running Day! I love it! On Monday, we drove to Columbus to go to the Performance Bike shop to get a good helmet, a seat, and a lock. I prefer less chafing and a wider seat for comfort. We had a blast shopping and drooling over all the other cool things to get later; such as a trunk rack, seat post rack to hold baskets to get groceries in, and a bike and helmet for my husband too.

This morning, I was grateful that I have a bike to use. Our vehicle's brakes have not been functioning very well. We decided to take our vehicle into the local auto repair shop. My husband had to be at work at 7AM this morning. I dropped him off then drove back home to grab my bike so I could bike home after dropping the car off at the repair shop by 8AM. The repairman did not know how long it was going to take to find the problem and repair it. I am so glad that I decided to grab my bike and ride home. It was a beautiful morning and the mileage was not bad - 7.7 miles. Then I biked some more!

Thinking of bikes, this month (May) is National Bike Month. Cool huh? Also, May 16-20 is BIKE to WORK week. On the 19th, where I teach, I have professional development training. I will bike there!Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-50052608534616346922011-05-11T09:33:00.000-07:002011-05-11T09:33:33.061-07:00Countdown to Half Marathon!Today is Wednesday. That means there are only 3 more days until I leave with my husband and friend (who is also running with me) to Cleveland, OH to run in the Cleveland Half Marathon! I am getting more excited!Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-60322812057535498192011-05-08T06:35:00.000-07:002011-05-08T06:35:15.512-07:00Joys of WomanhoodTo all mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives:

What an amazing day to celebrate our divine worth and potential as women! I believe that Mother's Day is not only for mothers who have children, but for ALL WOMEN. It is a day to reflect on the glorious opportunities that we have available to us to brighten, comfort, share, and listen to each other. It is a time to be grateful for the women in our lives that have guided us through our journey of embracing what it means to be a woman. Without my mother, grandmother, sisters and other women in my life, I would not know how vitally important it is to carry on a legacy of faith, virtue, wisdom, and beauty. I will be forever grateful to them. Thank You!

Please take the time today to embrace being a woman who is of great worth!Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-35071267893008744092011-05-04T06:20:00.000-07:002011-05-04T06:20:26.986-07:00School is OUT!As an educator, these words could not be so welcoming or exciting :) It has been a challenging but rewarding school year. I have learned so much about myself this year. It feels good to know that I have completed two years of teaching and wonder if I will continue to teach for another 30 years. I am grateful that I will be returning next year with the same school district. I have all summer -in fact, four whole months to get ready for the next school year. I will embrace these next few months!

(In case you are wondering, the school district I teach in is building a new k-12 school. Therefore, we started in early August to get out early May so that we can move into the new building next year in September. The progress on the new school is amazing - can't wait!)Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-75446242219875143822011-04-29T18:22:00.000-07:002011-04-29T18:22:20.164-07:00Healthy Teachers - Healthy Schools...Picture!The local newspaper interviewed us in regards to the Healthy Teachers-Healthy Schools contest. The reporter took a few pictures and congratulated us on our accomplishment. I wanted to share a picture with all of you. (Of course, I am the only one with a dress - cannot miss me, I guess.)
I wish I were that same girl (which is me as a child)- hands on her hips, confident, and brave to face all of life's difficulties with a smile, knowing that this is part of our mortal experience on earth. I hope that I can smile more often (which, my siblings are amazing at) when sore trials come upon me.

I need to tell myself that
I am CONFIDENT
I am STRONG
I am BRAVE
I am TRUE
The minute that I am gung-ho, ready to head out for a run, it begins to rain. This has happened everyday for a week. :( I have to wait until it stops, because I do not like running in the rain. Although, I have done it many times! I have felt discouraged because the Cleveland Half is in 17 days! I do not feel adequately prepared. I have never ran a half so I am not sure what to expect. I have thought that to run well you always have to go hard core. Well, I have not been running hard core. I was asked by my friend, who is also running in the Cleveland Half, if I had a time that I would like to finish in. I replied that I just would like to finish! My friend ran in the Columbus Half, so she has experience. She has been very helpful in deciding what to and not to bring. I will just have to do my best!

Do you have any suggestions as to how to prepare for a half marathon?Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-24807749471821236502011-04-25T12:17:00.000-07:002011-04-25T12:17:43.649-07:00Healthy Teachers - Healthy Schools Contest Part IIIWe WON the contest! Our school team lost the most percentage of weight in comparison to the other area schools. I feel like I did not help much with my 15 pounds, but it was definitely a team effort. I am getting closer to my feel great weight - much to celebrate!Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-80210161648214927142011-04-23T13:18:00.000-07:002011-04-23T13:18:25.451-07:00Muddy Trails! This morning, I ran a 5K at a local nature preserve. This week has been very rainy so the trails were extremely muddy and swampy :( However, despite the mud, swamp, twists and turns, and steep hills I realized that I enjoy trail running. It was absolutely gorgeous - the smell of spring, blossoms blooming on the trees, a wooden bridge, a bird lookout, and the sun shining through the trees. I loved every minute of the race! Next time though, I will have to wear an older pair of shoes and a change of clothes just in case. I even placed 2nd in my age group for 25-29 year olds - uber elated :)

Well, off to finish packing to visit our families for Easter!
It was sponsored by a college campus group for Run to Empower. At first, I did not know if I would even run because it was pouring down rain. The race was delayed a half an hour but so worth it. After the down pour, the sun was bright and warm! My sister Sarah was there with me. We had such a BLAST! I enjoyed every minute of the race as I saw her after completing each mile and finally at the finish. She is an amazing cheerleader. In fact, I received a personal record of 29: something. (They used very informal timing with their cell phones.) I look forward to seeing the pictures that she took of us and me running. So, hurry up Sarah! :) I will definitely post them.Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-16719214161007991142011-04-12T10:50:00.000-07:002011-04-12T10:50:47.952-07:00I Think I can, I Think I can....Almost there! It has been a whirl wind these past few weeks. It is so hard to believe that the school year is coming to a close. The weeks are passing by faster and faster. I can hardly keep up! I have to tell myself I'm almost there! I will make it through - just like the Little Engine that Could.

Being a teacher is rewarding, but as the year draws to an end there is so much to finish - material to cover, prepare students for achievement testing, meetings to attend, asking questions like,"What more can I do that I have not done already?" and the list continues on.

I feel terrible that I did not take the time to share that my husband and I celebrated our first anniversary on the 2nd of April. Sadly, it came and went. The most important day of my life and I do not remember if we even did anything. Just pathetic :(

Somedays, I loose perspective. I forget to smell the roses, you could say. I need to STOP and just take a few moments for myself and my husband. I have opportunities to run, walk, read a great book, talk with friends and family, but get so caught up in what I am doing that I do not. I spread myself too thin.

I started an amazing book entitled Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand about a month ago. Have I finished it? No! Will I? Yes! It's my challenge for this month. Along with contining to run in preparation for the Cleveland Half; which is, by the way, next month!

Do you have moments where you spread yourself too thin and forget to "smell the roses"? How do you keep the balance between family/home and work life?Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-918063577176554741.post-32953785839243083592011-03-28T13:59:00.000-07:002011-03-28T13:59:06.273-07:00Birthday Fun!On Friday night, my husband and I went out for my birthday. We went to P.F. Chang's. I had never been there before, but really enjoyed it. I loved how the waitress asked first thing if we had any gluten or peanut allergy. I am so glad she did, because I have a gluten intolerance caused by an autoimmune disorder. (In fact, I have not shared my journey toward becoming gluten free, but will have to later.)

After our dinner, we headed to the Dayton Mall. Of course, we had not been there either, so we had to check it out. I guess you could say it was like all the others. Well, unless you go to The Mall of America in Minnesota (which I have not been to either). We window shopped -looked and drooled over all the cute fashions for spring. However, we could not resist purchasing a book or two at Barnes&Noble. My husband and I love books! Believe it or Not, but every date we went on ended at a Barnes&Noble or other local bookstore. We could spend hours in them :)

For a late night treat, we stopped by Starbucks! Oh, how I love Starbucks too! My favorite is a hazelnut steamer with soy milk. Yum!

It was a great night to spend time together. How do you celebrate your birthday? Hopefully, not a day late!Carrie Bethhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/07898088849616245080noreply@blogger.com0
